How To Get Rid Of That Pesky Double Chin & Pose Your Neck!

How to pose your neck & avoid that double chin when modeling.

The difference between a good neck and bad neck is shown through poses.

Proper techniques are simple to remember once you understand the animal kingdom. This blog will guide you to properly identify the animals you’ll want to take after or stay away from when posing.

Animals in the good neck kingdom

Giraffe

  • The giraffe’s long neck makes it the perfect animal to represent when posing. This pose requires you to elongate your neck, whether it’s backwards or stretched to one side showing a little profile. As long as the photographer can visibly see your neck it’s working! This particular pose is going to help get rid of that natural double chin you might have going on as well. Elongating your neck makes for your natural skin to stretch out a bit more giving the illusion of a longer and slimmer neck.

Horse

  • Although the horse's neck is thick, it’s a perfect example of the illusion “I’m here but I’m not showing”. Further more let’s say you’ve been modeled with hair extensions, a difficult outfit that goes high on your neck, or maybe you have naturally long hair. The horses mane covers one side of their neck while still managing to provide the illusion of their neck being visible & the same should go for you. For example let’s say you have a turtleneck on, the turtleneck may be hiding the visibility of your neck but angling your head and giving a good side profile, or even using your hands to frame your face, will give the illusion of “i’m here but I’m not showing”.

OWL

  •  I know what you’re thinking…but yes the owl is also a great representation of a good neck. The owl can continuously turn their head from either side while still allowing their beauty in facial features show. Ways to style this pose is by turning your head, & lifting your chin up a bit. Doing so you will be getting rid of any natural double chin and no neck illusion. The most important tip to remember with this pose is to drop the shoulder your head is turned to. Dropping that shoulder allows for your neck to show making for your gorgeous side profile to show!

Animal’s in the No neck/Bad neck Kingdom

Turtle

  • The turtle is known for being able to retract its neck, however they tend to hide their necks length and visibility. When you pose this certain way it doesn’t allow you to fully show your neck's length and visibility resulting in the no neck look. This happens because your neck is so far back compared to your head it results in your neck losing visibility. Ways to get rid of this is by dropping your shoulders and relaxing your body. The turtle tends to appear when you are not comfortable in front of the lens. With that being said, clear your mind, reset your pose & let your neck come forward and your head a tilted down a bit.

 Gorilla

  • Gorillas are very wide and tend to have big back muscles leading into their head giving the look of a no neck.  This is most common in male models. Male models tend to hunch over a bit, or strain their neck muscles resulting in a no neck illusion. Get rid of that hunch and strain and allow for your neck to relax. The way you'll want to get rid of this is by lowering your shoulders and relaxing your lower facial features. Male models need to understand that it's not about showing how big & muscular they are in photos, but rather understand muscular definition is best shown within the ways you frame your face and body along with lighting.
